<p>The use of laser therapy has been slow to develop and not without controversy along the way. Forty years have passed since initial research reported positive biological effects from laser light (Carney et al, 1967). Despite the publication of over 2,500 titles relating to therapeutic light, there is still debate over its clinical use particularly for lymphoedema management. Limited research is available compared with other conditions such as pain and wound management. This article gives an overview of what laser is, how it works, current research trends and some clinical protocols in the management of lymphoedema.</p>
