Although the mere presence of bacteria in chronic wounds may not indicate active infection or impaired healing, there is a point at which bacteria do begin to inhibit healing, which can result in local or even systemic infection. This point of pathogenicity is when the bacteria start to secrete proteases. This Made Easy discusses bacterial protease activity (BPA) as an objective marker for pathogenicity, and introduces the WOUNDCHEK Bacterial Status Test, an innovative lateral flow test for the qualitative assessment of BPA directly from a wound swab sample.
