In breast surgery, surgical site infections and other surgical site complications are major issues. These can impact patients’ morbidity, quality of life and treatment pathways, with economic implications for healthcare providers. Four centres in Ireland and Northern Ireland implemented prophylactic single-use negative pressure wound therapy (sNPWT) following breast surgery and captured data from patients at risk of surgical site complications. Analyses of complications, costings and estimated reduction in length of hospital stay with sNPWT were undertaken. The study demonstrated the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of sNPWT for reducing complications following breast surgery across a range of oncological and cosmetic indications in a real-world clinical setting.
