<p>As a student nurse, there were inevitable occasions when I would be asked to write an essay exploring the skills required to become a ‘good nurse’, enabling and encouraging me to focus on improving my proficiency in those I thought were most important. Many years have passed since that time, and the expectation and role expansion have changed things considerably. </p>
