There have been numerous plays on words in 2020 that have made analogies to having great (20/20) vision. As skin and wound care providers, we can do the same. Our ability to ‘see’ and predict developing stage 1 pressure injury (ulcer), see injury in darkly pigmented skin and see areas of poor perfusion have been troublesome for a long time. Some of the most encouraging technologies for enhanced skin and soft tissue assessment are recommended in the new pressure injury guidelines released in November 2019 (European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel, Pan Pacific Pressure Injury Alliance [EPUAP] et al, 2019). These are the measurement of skin perfusion (called skin temperature in the guideline) and measurement of sub-epidermal moisture.
